Thinking about what comes after university?

Undecided on what you’ll do once you finish studying?

“Innovation consultant” can sound like one of those job titles your granny would proudly tell her friends about – without being entirely sure what it means. If you’d like to arrive at your next family get‑together with stories about how you’re using your degree, master’s or PhD to do work that ranges from creating Olympic medal‑winning swimsuits to helping people put contact lenses in for the first time, you should consider applying for a role at Innovia Technology.

So, what is an innovation consultant?

At Innovia Technology, innovation consultants work in teams to help world leading businesses solve complex challenges.

Our clients come to us with challenges that don’t have obvious answers. Together, we explore what’s going on, what’s getting in the way, and how science, design, technology, behaviour and strategy can work together to move things forward.

It sounds simple. It often isn’t. But solving something as a team – having that moment when the pieces click and a client suddenly sees a clear way forward – is hugely rewarding. And that feeling never gets old.

what SORT OF PROBLEMS DO WE WORK ON?

Keeping food flowing
Helping a company understand why a physical product wasn’t flowing properly through its manufacturing system, costing time, money and more than a few headaches.

Adherence to taking medication
Working with healthcare teams to understand why a medicine wasn’t having the effect it should, and what could be done differently.

Johnson & Johnson
Supporting teams to reduce the risk of lung cancer returning after surgery by rethinking recovery pathways.

Heineken
Helping brands like Heineken find ways to discourage drink driving, through real world testing to effect behaviour change.

PepsiCo
Making crisps… crispier
Yes. We really did work on making crisps crispier. The work even won an Institute of Physics award for the successful application of soft-matter physics!

Some problems are technical. Others are human.
Most are a combination of both.

HOW DO WE DO IT?

We work holistically. It might sound a bit abstract but it’s incredibly practical.

The defining characteristic of holistic innovation is the integration of different perspectives. It means that we approach challenges with a mindset where we are open, curious, and keen to work with people from different disciplines from the very start of a project to integrate all our experience and thinking together. Engineers, scientists, behavioural scientists, designers and strategists work side‑by‑side, contributing at the same time rather than passing work from one team to another.

For you, that means working in closely integrated teams to understand which questions are most valuable, prioritising work where it really counts, and testing ideas from multiple angles. It helps reduce uncertainty early, avoids the classic handover problem, and leads to better outcomes for clients – and more fulfilling work for us as Innovians.

What does a typical week look like?

You’ll usually be working on several projects at once – some just starting, some in full swing, others wrapping up.

Outside of the project work itself, there’s ongoing learning and knowledge sharing. There’s often a learning session where you hear about how we’ve solved a particular type of problem in an unexpected way. You’ll also meet with colleagues who share similar academic backgrounds to you to discuss recent research and developments in your field. Post conference debriefs are always popular as a way to understand the biggest challenges sectors are facing. And of course, you’ll attend our weekly company meeting to hear what’s happening across the business.

Early on, you’ll also have regular check‑ins with your line manager and your buddy – including somewhere safe to ask (again) how timesheets work, how the photocopier operates, and why you can’t book a meeting room more than 180 days in advance.

Sounds good. What’s the catch?

Another fair question. This is work that requires you to think – every day. We’re not coasting. Our clients are global leaders in their fields, and they come to us with their most complex challenges because they expect to be challenged in return.

Working at Innovia Technology suits people who enjoy problem‑solving, who care about changing the world for good through their work, and who are comfortable explaining and defending their ideas. You’re never expected to do that alone: client meetings happen in teams, and plenty of training and support is provided.

Our clients are thoughtful, curious people. They’ll challenge our thinking – and respect what we bring to the table – which makes for strong, longterm partnerships.

Want to know more?

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be attending university careers fairs across the UK, meeting students who are starting to think about what comes next.

13 May

University of Warwick

Jonathan Shaw is a Chemist and Natural Sciences graduate who joined Innovia in 2023. Rich Bown is an Engineer with more than a decade of experience. They’re keen to meet as many people as possible and hear about what they’re looking for in their careers.

9 June

University of Oxford

Molly Ghinn is a Behavioural Scientist and Lawrence Schofield is an Engineer. They are both more recent graduates. They’re working on projects across the sectors and on different types of challenges too. Ask them about what it was like to onboard at Innovia, their work–life balance, and everything they get up to outside work.

10 June

Durham University

Molly Ghinn and Richard Andrews. Molly is a Behavioural Scientist who works across a number of sectors. Richard is an Engineer who’s worked at Innovia for more than a decade. Plugged into most types of work we do, they can share insights from projects we can talk about in person, but aren’t available on our website!

22 June

University of Cambridge

Emma Bertenshaw is our Head of Behavioural Science and Rich Bown is an Engineer who manages some of our most important client relationships. Both have been at Innovia for over a decade and can talk about what a long‑term career here looks like.

These events give us the chance to talk honestly about non‑academic career paths, explain what innovation consultancy really looks like day‑to‑day, and share the skills and mindsets we look for when hiring.

If you’re open to exploring how your degree, your curiosity, and your problem‑solving skills might translate into real‑world impact, come and talk to us.

A single conversation won’t define your career. But it might be the nudge that helps you spot a path you hadn’t seen before.
