Adherence to taking medication

Adherence to taking medication

Helping people to take medication correctly

Context

Patients need to adhere to the proper dosing schedule to get the full effect of their medications, but many don’t do so. Our client wanted to ensure its drug was taken correctly, so patients recovered more quickly and were more likely to choose it again if they needed.

Approach

We reanalysed our client’s primary data and the relevant academic literature to identify the barriers and promoters to adherence. Using the COM-B behavioural model, we identified the key barriers and promoters, and then designed interventions and embodiments that were compatible with the underlying pharmacology. We then rendered the best embodiments so that they could be easily visualised.

Impact

Our portfolio of interventions provided new ideas for improving adherence, both through physical interventions like packaging changes, and through digital interventions like guidelines for app design. Critically, we supported the interventions with evidence-based testable hypotheses and descriptions of necessary primary research, so they could be validated. The client was impressed with the rigorous and systematic approach to behaviour change and we have worked together on further challenges in this area.
