Using data for better mining
If mining companies knew exactly where to mine, they could change their processes to be more efficient and sustainable. Anglo American wanted to do just that by integrating the insights from its existing geoscience data. It asked Innovia to design and facilitate an Open Forum as part of its FutureSmart Mining programme, both to demonstrate how data integration can create value, and also to initiate change within the organisation.
We identified the technological and behavioral barriers to change within Anglo American and presented examples of successful digital transformations in other industries. With the stakeholders from leading mines, we outlined pilot opportunities and identified an internal team to run these pilots and share learning and insights.
The Forum was attended by technology experts from companies including Shell, GE, IBM, and Amazon. It clarified the company’s requirements in machine learning for analysing their datasets, allowing more informed decisions. Anglo American has since started testing machine learning algorithms for differentiating barren and mineralized rocks. The Forum provided a clear demonstration to Anglo American’s partners of its commitment to making the data-driven mine a reality.
