Creating concepts for novel pack lines
SABMiller operates pack lines across the world, spanning the poorest and the most affluent markets. It asked Innovia to develop a set of alternative visions for the future of the brewing industry and to create concepts for next generation pack lines.
Technical, social and political change will all critically impact the design of future pack lines. For example, consumer demand for variety is likely to favour more flexible lines and new regulations may require more sustainable packaging materials. We found that for many markets, a relentless drive towards faster or more automated lines is not appropriate. Instead, simpler and cheaper lines that can be more reliably operated by the local workforce are more suitable. We also explored how the pack hall might operate as a set of networked machines, rather than as standalone lines.
SABMiller used Innovia’s work to catalyse discussions with pack line suppliers and to stimulate fresh thinking across the supply chain.
