Advancing custom medical devices through simulation

Helping patients choose the right product with confidence

Context

Medical devices are increasingly customised, often using simulation. However, simulating patient-device interactions is tricky: not least because humans and preferences vary! A well-known manufacturer of medical devices asked Innovia to develop a simulation method accurate and fast enough for individual customisation, while allowing for subjective preferences.

Approach

We developed a deep understanding of the biology and physics underpinning the challenge. We then prototyped a tool, both writing new code and using off-the-shelf software libraries to accelerate development. To solve a critical challenge, we integrated a recently-developed AI algorithm. We demonstrated the system in the intended production environment to prove it met the need.

Impact

Innovia Technology is continuing to collaborate with the client to develop a simulation tool which is ready to be used with consumers. The client believes that the tool has the potential to significantly increase the sales of their custom devices by increasing patient engagement and confidence.
