Identifying value within vertical farming
Vertical farming has eye-catching sustainability benefits around land use, water use and productivity. But it’s hard to cut through the hype in technology providers’ sales pitches.
PepsiCo asked Innovia to identify where vertical farming could deliver value for its business, for example to meet pep+ commitments.
We interviewed relevant stakeholders to uncover PepsiCo’s key business challenges that could, in principle, be overcome by vertical farming. We then conducted a comprehensive analysis of scientific, government and techno-economic literature, and the existing vertical farming market.
Comparing PepsiCo’s needs to the benefits and limitations of vertical farming, we identified where this technology could, and couldn’t, benefit PepsiCo.
Innovia gave PepsiCo clear criteria for use cases for vertical farming in their business and supply chains, including what would have to change to unlock new use cases. Our client appreciated the unbiased assessment and balanced overview we provided.
The concise internal report we produced was easily shared with senior stakeholders interested in the potential of this new technology.
