Understanding cognitive drivers of sports performance
Sports nutrition typically focuses on improving physical outcomes. PepsiCo wanted to help athletes with new ways to also improve mental performance. It asked Innovia to explore additional relevant cognitive factors for a particular sport, work out how to measure them, and then identify ingredients that might improve mental performance.
We conducted a detailed needs analysis to identify the critical cognitive factors influencing performance. To understand how to measure those factors, we took a first-principles approach, supplemented with expert interviews. We then identified which factors might be affected by ingredients. From the scientific and patent literature, we then identified and ranked promising ingredients on the likelihood of improving mental performance.
We helped PepsiCo rapidly find ways to support a fast-growing sector of athletes – one that has uniquely different needs from its other sports consumers. We shared our work with a wide group of stakeholders, helping them to understand this unfamiliar area, see the potential for food and beverages to help the athletes, and create a plan for subsequent development activities.
