Innovia developed combustion fuel concepts that could go straight to proof-of-concept testing and identified applications for new chemistries…
Communicating technology through experiences
Every year, Shell hosts an event called 'Make The Future Live', which promotes the Shell brand through interactive exhibits. In 2017, the event took place just before Shell launched new formulations for its retail fuels. The fuels team wanted to demonstrate the technical insights behind these improved fuels, while staying true to the Shell brand and being fun for visitors. Innovia's task was to design the fuels exhibit.
We used behavioural science to develop a solid scientific rationale for engaging the public using the exhibit. It showed visitors the transition from non-renewable to renewable fuels and explained how novel energy sources could be progressively incorporated – starting with biofuels and moving towards green electricity and hydrogen. We used experiential design to develop practical demonstrators to help visitors really explore the science behind the fuels.
Shell used one of Innovia's recommended themes - Fuelling Our Generations - as the main theme of the stand, and built four of Innovia's technical demonstrators. These directly demonstrated Dynaflex, a new fuel technology that launched soon after the event.
