For the potential of biofuels to be realised, the production must be optimised. Innovia assessed a range of technologies to improve yield and scale…
Assessing water sustainability
Innovia worked with a cross-functional Shell team drawn from its upstream and downstream businesses to assess where water falls on the Group's risk profile and whether additional measures are needed to mitigate risk.
Innovia analysed the water usage for different energy pathways and showed the extent to which the development of tar sands, enhanced oil recovery, and biofuels will change demand. We also highlighted emerging social and economic drivers, such as water rights, the UN millennium development goals and pricing frameworks.
We showed how Shell’s R&D portfolio for water treatment technologies compared with research in other industries. A key perspective was the potential change in water availability arising from climate change and population growth. This study has helped Shell develop its global water management strategy.
