Setting priorities for long-term research


As a leading energy player, Shell has a well-deserved reputation for taking the long view in its business decisions. For example, Shell’s chief scientists are recognised thought-leaders in their field and act as ambassadors for new science and technology.


Shell wished to set priorities for long-term research and, as part of its approach, collaborated with Innovia. Working with the chief scientists we created an overview of emerging technologies likely to impact Shell’s core oil and gas business in the next 10-15 years. The combination of Shell’s and Innovia’s perspectives helped structure the complex landscape, and our cross-industry experience showed potential gaps in the portfolio.


We designed and compiled an in-house magazine to bring the study to life. This has now been shared widely through the Shell R&D community. It both acts as a source of stimulus and helps to set ongoing priorities for front-end innovation. The landscape is also useful in steering Shell’s collaboration with external research centres and technology providers.
