Anticipating disruptive changes allows an organisation to set priorities for long-term research. Innovia explored emerging technologies to inform research strategy…
Identifying technologies from different industries
Shell is a large operator in North Sea oil & gas production with a deserved reputation for technology excellence. It asked Innovia to review the broad range of technologies that will be needed as operations move to the Atlantic margin where seas are notoriously rough and water depths exceed 1000m.
As well as assessing leading players in the conventional oil supply chain, we showed where there are potentially useful technologies in non oil sectors such as aerospace, mining, defence and automotive. Examples include optical fiber systems for integrity monitoring of critical airframe components, use of autonomous vehicles in nuclear decommissioning, and acoustic passive surveillance devices used for defence.
Shell used our study to identify development priorities that are consistent with its medium to long term business objectives in the North Sea sector.
