Sustainable Roads of the Future
Our client’s bitumen products have the potential to radically reduce the energy footprint of road construction. In developing countries, they could also aid the development of rural road networks by reducing the complexity of the hot supply chain. However, existing low-energy solutions lead to roads of poor durability.
So as to break this paradigm, Innovia developed a structured framework for innovation. We found useful analogies in systems for drug delivery and transport processes in cells and plants. These led to a range of mechanisms for switching the viscosity of the bitumen after road-laying. In particular, we identified various chemistries for reducing harmful residual water that can lead to premature road failure.
These directions are now being developed by our client and will enable emerging economies to build new infrastructure at a lower impact to the environment.
