Scale-Up of Bioenergy Production
Our client is developing technologies and businesses based on renewable energy sources such as bio-ethanol produced by fermentation of corn. It asked Innovia to assess creatively the commercial attractiveness of AcidX, a promising alternative approach at an early stage of development. AcidX is based on the composting of biomass to organic acids and, unlike rival processes, can be located on or near the farm, reducing the costs of transportation.
Innovia estimated the cost of fuel produced by this process using a mixture of methods and insights drawn from agricultural science, biochemistry, chemical engineering and economics. We investigated how the technology would scale-up and created a series of scenarios describing how the bioenergy value chain might evolve given a successful commercialisation.
This allowed our client to assess the ultimate commercial potential of the technology at an early stage in its development.
