Open Innovation for Future Oil-Spill Recovery

The Norwegian Clean Seas Association for Operating Companies (NOFO) asked Innovia to create new concepts for oil-spill recovery to catalyse innovation in the supply chain and encourage participation from new entrants. NOFO has responsibility for protecting thousands of kilometres of Norwegian coast-line in the event of a spill from offshore oil installations in Norwegian waters. To prevent potentially catastrophic damage to the natural habitat, NOFO aims to contain and recover oil in open water.

Innovia found several powerful analogies, for example the structure of water-trapping molecules in animal joints and the use of laminar plates to coalesce solids in sewage treatment plants. We prepared a poster, subsequently shared with open innovation partners, to show different approaches to addressing the problem and illustrating new concepts.

Following Innovia’s work, NOFO started several development projects with third parties.
