Our client is a world leader in instruments for keyhole surgery. Its products improve medical outcomes and shorten hospital stays, but at a significant cost. In parallel with an internal project, Innovia was asked to look at opportunities to dramatically reduce the cost of an important class of surgical tools. New designs had to meet the technical needs of the procedure and the ergonomic needs of surgeons, all within complex regulatory and cultural frameworks.
We began by systematically deconstructing the problem and then created a mechanical design which integrates the components in a novel way to save cost while maintaining or even enhancing performance.
The work independently confirmed an attractive path to market for our client, who is pursuing development of the concept.
