A New Patterning Technology for Nonwoven Manufacture

Our client, a leading nonwoven manufacturer, needed to impart a very small scale and accurate surface texture over a very large area – a formidable challenge, beyond the capabilities of any known manufacturing process.

We identified a range of relevant patterning technologies and assessed their science: Could the technology be adapted to meet the required performance criteria? A photo-curing process stood out and gave promising results in Innovia’s in-house trials. However, it was not suited to large scale production and adaptation would be a stretch. Innovia searched a range of industries for companies with appropriate capabilities and found a good candidate. We designed a joint programme and through a close partnership managed to produce prototype webs and validate the manufacturing route.

Our client was delighted by the results: a clear demonstration of feasibility, potential for IP and a motivated partner for ongoing development.
