Paper-Making Energy Reduction

Context

Every year, the US pulp and paper industry consumes more than 2 billion billion joules of energy – around 8% of the energy use for the entire manufacturing sector. Our client had already made impressive reductions in its energy consumption. Facing further rises in energy costs and with a strong corporate sustainability mandate, they asked Innovia for help to identify breakthrough improvements.

Approach

Using systematic energy flow mappings, we identified a number of foci for innovation across the manufacturing process. Our creative approach then drew on analogies ranging from the drying of algae for third generation biofuels to domestic storage heaters. The result was a portfolio of opportunities, both short term (e.g. novel pump designs) and long term (e.g. paradigm shift for paper drying).

Impact

Our client is currently implementing our recommendations from the programme, and expects to make significant energy savings.
